Robot Challenges

Fire-Fighting Challenge

Our event goals: Fun while Learning, Sharing, and Teamwork….Winning is secondary.

Challenge Goal: To design, build, and program an autonomous robot that can locate 4 lit candles, approach and extinguish each, without touching the candles.

  • All 100% autonomous robot platforms are allowed; $1500 USD limit on robot value.
  • The robot has 3 minutes to complete the task.
  • Three (3) of the four (4) candles will be hidden behind ~ 18″ (45.7 cm) long x ~ 16″ (40.6 cm) high unattached walls, the candle nearest the starting location will be in full view of the robot.
  • Teams will place their robot down and then walls and candles will be placed. New placement for each robot, each team

Open to: Teams of 2 to 3 players in the divisions of

  • Middle School
  • High School
  • Big Kids

All teams are playing as ONE DIVISION!

  • NEW 2017 – candle height will vary from 3 cm to 15 cm. ALL CANDLES will be different heights
  • NEW 2017 –  1 candle will be surrounded by 3 walls. 2 candles behind one (1) wall, and 1 candle in plain view of the robot at its starting location.
  • A safe extinguishing system (determined by the RoboRAVE International Directors)
  • ~3.6 m x ~2.4 m play area defined by a 7.6 cm wide white border (white duct tape) with a 2.5 cm black line (black duct tape) center strip – NOTE: THIS BORDER may be used to turn your robot back into the area, OR move along the border, OR may exit out and re-enter at any point.
  • 3 walls, unattached to the floor, are used to hide 3 of the 4 candles which are each standing on their own ~40.6 cm diameter white circle.
  • Each circle has a 2.5 cm wide black ring circle located 2.5 cm inside the edge of the larger circle. This white-black-white combination is two-fold: 1) for robot sensors to stop the robot before touching the candle, 2) to indicate to the Challenge monitors the robot is eligible for full score, if it extinguishes the candle, without contact. Contact is defined as: once the robot is INSIDE the white circle AND the candle is LIT, no contact can be made before, during or after the candle is extinguished. ONCE the robot leaves the circle AND the flame is OUT, contact is allowed WITHOUT penalty while it searches other candles.
